Set up on Monkton Ridge, with splendid views all the way out to the Adirondack Mountains of New York, Yates Family Orchard offers 28-odd apple varieties in the fall, including Gala, Honey Crisp, McIntosh, Sweet William, and Golden Russet. A U-pick mosey through the orchard is sheer bliss, and meanwhile the Orchard Stand comes sumptuously stocked this time of year.
Stony Grove (1286 Pratt Rd, Jeffersonville, VT)
Established a few years back on the historic, mid-19th-century grounds of the Pratt Farm, Stony Grove grows both apples and blueberries just a stone’s throw from Smugglers Notch. The apple varieties on offer include Honey Crisp, Empire, Liberty, Nova Spy, and Autumn Crisp, and besides the U-pick pleasures there’s apple cider available as well.
Hunger Mountain Orchard (88 Thurston Ln, Waterbury Center, VT)
This long-running orchard nestled against the Worcester Range typically provides U-pick apples into mid-October.
