Scenic Winter Drives in Vermont From Your Edson Hill Guest Room
Many Edson Hill guests relish the close proximity to one of New England’s truly legendary ski and snowboard destinations: Stowe Mountain Resort, set high up the slopes of Vermont’s loftiest peak, the Green Mountain crown of 4,083-foot Mount Mansfield. The short trip up to that resort—which lays claim to 2,360 feet of vertical, nearly 600 skiable acres, and some 40 miles of trails—is its own topnotch scenic drive, needless to say.
Route 100, which passes right through Stowe, offers some of the best sightseeing in all of New England. A classic jaunt is south down to Rochester, Vermont, taking in the short hike (possibly aided by hiking crampons and trekking poles) to see the Green Mountain State’s tallest waterfall, Moss Glen Falls, in its frosty mode, and enjoying views of 4,083-foot Mount Ellen and the lovely Mad River Valley along the way.
Part of that route as well as an extensive circuit to the north helps constitute the Green Mountain Byway, meanwhile, which adds plenty more Green Mountain scenery (and more charming hamlets) to the mix. Keep in mind that Smugglers’ Notch Pass, though, which connects Stowe and Jeffersonville, is closed during the winter.
